Annual Navy Football Luncheon Coming Soon

Save the dates in your calendars.  We will have our annual Navy Football luncheon in a little over a month, on Friday, August 27, 2021.  Join us for an entertaining presentation by our very own Mike Yeager ’76.  The former Navy Football Quarterback, who outscored Army 100-6, will recount the last season and give us a forecast of the upcoming season.

The venue will be at one of El Tiempo’s locations based on the expected attendance.  We will send more information regarding tickets shortly.  Until then, save the date.  We look forward to seeing you all.

Gulf Coast Connection in the Latest Navy Recruitment Ad

The Texas Gulf Coast Chapter is proud to have a connection to the latest recruitment ad for the U.S. Navy.  The new ad, “The Definition of Determination,” features Commander Kelley Jones, daughter of Chapter Board Member Nelson Jones ’72 (You can even catch a glimpse of him in the opening shot).  The autobiographical ad is sure to attract attention.

Commander Jones’ video is part of a “Make Your Name” campaign that highlights a variety of female leaders in the Navy.  You can find more of the videos here.

BZ Commander Jones!

U.S. Naval Academy Museum

The former director of the U.S. Naval Academy Museum, Claude Berube, recently discussed some of the amazing stories and artifacts contained in the Academy’s Museum in the History Hack podcast.  It is a fun listen.  You can find it here, on apple podcasts, spotify, or wherever else you aggregate your podcasts.

Successful Happy Hour

It was so nice to see so many of you at the Happy Hour earlier a couple of weeks ago.  We can’t wait to get together again.  We’ll let you know when we schedule our next event.  Until then, we hope you keep having a nice summer.

Tragic Day for the Naval Academy Family

Yesterday was a tragic day for the Naval Academy and Houston.  While in Annapolis to drop her son off for I-Day, Michelle Jordan Cummings, of Houston, was fatally shot by a stray bullet while sitting outside at the Graduate Hotel.  Annapolis Police are still investigating to find the culprit.  You can find more details with the local news coverage (CBS Baltimore and The Capital Gazette).

We can only imagine what the family is going through right now.  The Texas Gulf Coast Chapter of the Alumni Association shares our deepest sympathies and wishes to offer whatever support we can to Midshipman Candidate Leonard “Trey” Cummings III and his father during this difficult time.

Family friends started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses.  Please contribute what you can.  We are currently collaborating with the Parent’s Club to see what additional support we can provide and will let you know through the website, newsletters, and social media.

We look forward to seeing you all there.

Another Successful Luncheon

We don’t normally meet in June, but it turned out to be a good idea to add the lunch to our schedule last week.  It’s always nice to see so many of our regular attendees as well as a number of new faces.  Based on the reactions and questions, Bill Prom’s (Class of ’09) presentation on expeditionary shipbuilding during the War of 1812 went well.  We’ll let you know when the next events are scheduled.  We hope to see you then.

Successful May Lunch

Last week’s May luncheon proved to be a great success. Newc

omers, guests, and longtime participants seemed to enjoy the company and shared a few sea stories. We had the privilege to have Professor Richard Stoll speak to us on various current events and international relations topics.  Based on the number of questions, his presentation was clearly engaging.

If you weren’t able to make it to this event, we hope to see you next time.

All Academy Challenge

It’s that time of year again.  The All Academy Challenge is only 5 days away. This year’s competition runs from May 16-20 to see which service academy can raise funds from the largest percentage of their alumni.  The donations support the midshipmen with international programs, athletic programs, admissions outreach, the Center for Cyber Security Studies, the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership, and other programs

Last year 6,000 USNA Alumni raised over one million dollars.  Check the All Academy Challenge website for more details on how to participate.
